Stop #1: Casino El Camino

It’s 7:00 pm on a Tuesday. The sun is still blazing and the temperature is sittin’ strong at 90 degrees. I turn onto 6th street on my Harley and can’t help but feel awesome as I park directly across the street, between two cars, from our first Austin Burger Club stop, Casino El Camino.

It’s a strange feeling being on the infamous party street while its still light outside. Trash is lining the curbs, in plain sight, evidencing the craziness of the previous weekend.

I abruptly check myself to make sure of one thing… "I’m here to eat dinner, I’m not an alcoholic. Check."

As I walk through the dungeon-esque doors of Casino El Camino, the barren environment of the sidewalk outside quickly changes to a crowded, energetic bar-turned-restaurant. Due of the dim lit nature of the establishment, as soon as you open the doors, a room full of on looking eaters gaze upon you as light pours in. Quick, close the door.

After joining up with Julie and Rebecca, we get in line to order our burgers.

Julie got :

The Buffalo Burger. An all beef burger grilled in buffalo wing sauce, then topped with more sauce once cooked, and some bleu cheese crumbles.

Rebecca got:

The L.A. Burger. This burger has sprouts, vine ripened tomatoes, romaine lettuce, avocado, and shallot mayo.

I got:

The Pitts Burger. This one is the healthiest one (syke)…topped with sautéed mushrooms and onions, provolone cheese and A-1 sauce.

“That’ll be about 45 minutes to an hour.”

What?? This better be good.

Our tatted up server, who was really sweet, ushered out our tray of heaven. Oh boy it was good. My favorite of the three (since it’s a rule that we try all the options) was the Buffalo Burger. An amazing display of an out of the ordinary burger that is done very well. The buns were really soft and kind of sweet and the meat was cooked perfectly, trapping the flavors and juices wonderfully.

Did I mention that their burgers are ¾ pound burgers??

So in conclusion, Casino El Camino was a huge hit for a first visit of the Austin Burger Club. Although not perfect, for me, it came pretty dang close. An amazing burger, served by a cool lady, at a cool place that was a little too dark, with a little bit longer of a wait than I would like, but at an affordable price. The downsides were very much overshadowed by the upsides and I would definitely go there again!

What really happened was that we were hungry.

Three people who all love to eat and equally love their city, set out on a journey to try every burger in town.
